Ren & Stimpy have always and will always be some of my favorite cartoon characters. I remember being about 8 or so and my dad had me on the weekends (divorce, isn’t it great?) and he would plant me in front of the TV on Saturday mornings with a bowl of cereal and my good friends Ren and Stimpy.
Eventually I’d be cracking up at their insane antics involving everything from hairy nipples to hanging out on other planets. What’s weird is when you love something like Ren and Stimpy so much as a kid and then watch it when you’re an adult, it gives you a new appreciation for the cartoon. It’s weird because I realize that Ren and Stimpy is extremely vulgar. I mean, it’s not like Beavis and Butthead, but it’s not much better. Ren and Stimpy were purveyors of sick and wrong children’s TV and what the hell is better than that? I mean, I turned out just fine…
Anyways, I have to say that I was longing for some nostalgia when I ordered The Ren & Stimpy Show: Hokey Halloween Horror! Not to mention the Halloween theme is very appropriate for this week’s post.
Halloween, for those of you who don’t know, is my personal favorite holiday. My birthday is right after Halloween so growing up, I’d always get an ass ton of candy and then a bunch of presents a few days later. How fun is that? So, it makes sense that Halloween is my all-time favorite of holidays (unfortunately I detest the other holidays which causes me to be a little bit of a Grinch. O well.)
Back to Ren and Stimpy…this comic just reminded me how adult this cartoon really is. For instance, what kid is going to fully comprehend it when Ren says, “And the heediously, deesgusting, abhoration of nature they had to face…” I can guarantee I didn’t know what abhor meant when I was a kid. Also, it would have been really hard for me to even read Ren’s strange dialect, which by the way, sounds German. But Ren is a chihuahua. Last I checked, chihuahuas are NOT from Germany. Again, kids would never think about this or the fact that Stimpy looks more like a dog than Ren and yet he is a cat. Also not to mention, Stimpy often plays the role of a female (ie, he cooks and cleans up after Ren) even though he is a male; but I digress.
Anyways, happy Halloween to you all. May you have many tricks and hopefully even more treats this Friday night. And to the adults out there, please, I beg you not to give in to the lame teenagers who show up at your door with a cheap mask and a sweatshirt. For godsake, that’s what I wear on a daily basis. Put some more thought into it!
Happy Halloween, muahahahahahah!
