Frankenstein is pretty awesome. I think most people who are fans of monsters would agree with me when I say that Frankenstein, the one cultivated over the years through movies and books, is just an all-around cool monster. But like any horror character that’s been in our literary consciousness for quite some time, the Frankenstein plot-line has been played to death. However, I found a story new to me that’s all about rewriting Frankenstein. The name of the comic? Simply, FRANK.
One thing I’ve noticed since delving into the world of comics, is that a really good comic can make you feel like you’re watching a movie when it has great writing and awesome artwork. This comic has both. I read the first issue of FRANK (there are 4 in total) and it’s called, “Tail Bone Connects to the Elbow Bone.” It’s mostly about making Frank look like some strange superhero who saves people but the moster/hero itself has no idea why other than he wants to be “good.”
We meet Frank as a societal outcast who befriends a woman and her boyfriend after the woman is in a bad neighborhood and gets jumped by some evil dudes. They’re about to have their way with her when Frank busts the place up, inevitably saving the girl. This comic even shows Frank riding a bike and messing-up some corrupt cops.
Anyway, it was just a really good take on an old story/character. It made me wonder what other stories could be remade and how they could be remade. Most of the time, new remakes on old stories generally suck. Example: the new Willy Wonka movie with Johnny Depp as opposed to the old movie. I personally really liked the new movie, but the old will never really be outdone. I’d like to see a new remake on The Rocky Horror Picture Show because it’s the only musical I can stomach watching more than once. It’d also be cool if someone redid To Kill A Mockingbird and made it modern-day. That might be cool. Any other good stories that should be remade, leave them in the comments!

I like when writers/directors/authors, etc. put new spins on things, but I don’t know about this one. It’s tough for me to accept the fact that demented Dr. Frankenstein’s maniacal creation known as the monster could be thought of as a modern day pop culturized media twisted cliche of a hero doing what else than saving young predictable damsels in distress. Where is the originality? That just sends the wrong message about Dr. Frankenstein and discredits him as being a truly disturbed soul.
