Uncanny Origins #2: Quicksilver
Writer: Glenn Herdling

Quicksilver has always been my favorite evil mutant. Something about being so freaking fast always got to me. I used to run track way back when and think maybe that had something to do with it. Regardless of my liking him, I never knew his origin story. Now I do.

Well, if I can take this rather childish story for truth, that is. But let’s consider this story true for the sake of the post. I found two parts especially humorous. Well, I guess actually three. Here they are.

There is a point where Pietro (Quicksilver) is in a marketplace. He chooses to steal food from one of the vendors. I immediately thought of Aladdin. Now, considering this particular comic is so cartoony, I couldn’t help but think that possibly Aladdin inspired this scene. Either that, or it wasn’t that well thought out. All he needed was a monkey on his shoulder, and he would have been set.

The next two parts stem from the same event: Charles Xavier coming and asking Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to join the X-Men.

1) If you’ve ever read any sort of X-Men origin story, you’ll know what I’m talking about. EVERY time, to no failure, Prof. X shows up in his wheelchair asking the person to join the X-Men. You’d think he’d maybe think of a more creative way to ask them? You know, to switch things up. Possibly send a letter, singing telegram, or challenge them to a duel. He’s a smart man. He can think up something good.

2) Quick turns Prof. X down because he doesn’t want someone ordering him around, yet he accepts Magneto’s offer without any second thoughts. Take note that Magneto never explains that he’s Pietro’s dad, so that plays zero role in this decision. Is it just me or is that the dumbest cop-out as to why he doesn’t accept Prof. X’s offer? Say he wants evil! That’s what we all know he’s thinking.

Maybe this is actually all my fault for reading a 99 cents comic intended for children.
