Zombies, zombies everywhere!

What if this were true? How would we all cope? And is the appeal of zombie stories the fact that as humans are slightly fascinated with the thought that our very way of life, our civilization as we know it, can all come crashing down if a few people try and eat each other? (more…)

Alpha Flight #15: Attack of the Killer Zombies!
Writers: Steve Seagle and Duncan Rouleau
Art: Rob Hunter

One of the things I love about reading old comic books is the trip down memory lane through advertisements. I get to read about the new up and coming Genesis games, the radical food on the market these days, and board games that are totally gnarly. For example, I totally forgot about Kool Aid Bursts, but now I REALLY want one. Sometimes, though, these comics can just be ad overload and a) make me really appreciate indie publisher who don’t have ads and b) wonder how people can read magazines like Vogue.

Idle Hands thrown together by Wilbur

Well I’m still waiting for my shipment so I went and got done with a few housekeeping procedures around the ol’ bat.  Straightening out here, a little bit more there. I also realized after finally starting up IE7 that things look completely different color-wise. Fantastic. A lot of work is ahead for that sort of thing especially since I havent edited a stylesheet in lord knows how long.  Changes will be made though, and heads will roll.  Hopefully by next week I can begin reading again and get back into the cool crowd around here instead of some wierd greaser, who came in a time machine to present day.

Whopah!

First, the Euro. Next, the Justice League . . .? thrown together by Dalton

Justice League Europe #1
Writer: J.M. DeMatteis
Art: Bart Sears, Pablo Marcos

This comic crawls with irony and idiocity. I don’t know what else I should have expected from the highly acclaimed JLE (doesn’t have the same ring, does it?). Even the first page speaks a bad omen, as the only line spoken is someone off page saying “This is gonna be a disaster.” There’s also the fact that the cover has the JLE reading a JLA comic and saying “Wow, Deja Vu.” This comic is just so full of ’80s and the tacky fact that it’s a spin-off that it’s hard not to love.

Wonder Woman Donna Troy #1
Writer and Penciler: Jimenez Stokes

Well thanks for those posting in my absence last week, I was even more vacant than usual.  I did just order a new set of the good stuff. Although by good stuff I mean one decent trade and a whole pile of cheap crap. It’s going to be a good time. Anyway, finally I get to actually read a #1. It was a new experience, things were all linear, I wasn’t lost and making rediculous assumptions about charecters, pretty crazy. I disregarded the “Girlfrenzy” header at the top and dove right in. Hellboy: The Crooked Man #2 of 3

You know when someone won’t stop talking, butting in, or just plain being annoying, and you have to do everything you can to hold back from telling that person to “shut up”? Well, Hellboy doesn’t hold it back, and it’s awesome. I think what’s so great about Hellboy is his personality. There aren’t many superheroes that when a foe who has been annoying the shit out of them with talk the whole comic and is popping out of different places with her taunty verbage comes out and chips into a conversation will tell her to shut up and fire a shot at her. That’s Hellboy.

Clive Barker, I bow to thee… thrown together by Allison

Sorry for the late post today! You can blame Spore. The videogame has me hooked. What can I say???

As you all may know, I am obsessed with any and all things horror. So when I busted into my comic for today, I had high hopes as it’s created by Clive Barker. Too bad I didn’t realize it was just a preview issue!

Razorline: Superheros from the mind of Clive Barker, is an interesting preview into four separate comics including Hyperkind, Ectokid, Hokum & Hex, and Saint Sinner. It gives two to three pages of a few of the comics spurred from Barker’s demented imagination. In case you’re unfamiliar with Barker and his past work, he’s the creator of one of my all-time favorite movie series (and I can’t pick a particular one since they’re all awesome) HellRaiser.

Ultraman, ultra-awesome thrown together by Allison

Today I chose to read Ultraman! And I’m not going to lie…it’s pretty freaking sweet. Ultraman is a 300 foot tall superhero from space who travels to inhabited planets and fights whatever ugly, over-grown monster happens to be attacking civilization. The issue I read is #1 in the series and therefore gives a kind of background on Ultraman.

We meet Ultraman in space as he fights the evil, vagina-shaped Gudis; purveyor of disease and attacker of cities. Apparently Ultraman was originally born in Japanese children’s TV in 1966. Thus, he’s kind of like the human equivalent of Godzilla: he fights monsters the size of sky-scrapers and essentially saves the day while the rest of us lowly citizens run screaming from the city. Batman #679
Writer: Grant Morrison
Art: Tony Daniel and Sandu Florea

Ever heard the term, “bat-crazy”?  The term could be used best to describe Grant Morrison’s newest take on our favorite Dark Crusader.  The Batman RIP line is as crazy as they come.  Morrison is known for taking us down the road to crazy town.  From his runs on Animal Man to his own series such as WE3, Morrison is as eccentric as it comes in mainstream comics.

Fun Home
Alison Bechdel

Fun Home, by Alison Bechdel, is very different from any graphic novel I’ve seen. That’s probably why it won crazy amounts of awards and was voted Best Book of the Year by scads of periodicals including Time, Entertainment Weekly, New York Times, People, SF Chronicle, Village Voice, etc etc.

It’s a memoir. It’s a “tragicomic”. It’s a lesson in literature. It’s a coming out story. It’s a girl struggling with getting to know her distant father. I don’t know if Alison Bechdel herself coined the term “tragicomic” but it definitely fits this book. (more…)
