Ultimate Spider-man TPB #13: Hobgoblin
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: Mark Bagley

Well, since Wil took on a trade, I figure I might as well too. Yes, yes, the original plan was to read a wonderful Virgin Comics comic (ha!), but I couldn’t resist.

Anyway, I picked up this trade because it was on sale, but I honestly haven’t read Ultimate Spider-man in any sort of order. Something I find funny about Spider-man trades is that I always have a knack for picking one up that starts with the whole radioactive spider story over the first few pages. NEVER do I get a good ol’ fashion in medias res.

I don’t know if this is a result of bad luck, but for once I would like Spider-man to simply assume I know how he came into existence. Just like the neighborhood idiot, everyone knows the origin of the neighborhood Spider-man, so can’t he just jump into his story for once.

Something else I find funny about the Ultimate Spider-man series is Mary Jane and Peter’s relationship. First of all, they are total teenagers. Like they are young and all, but they act all grown-up(ish). I think a lot of it has to do with the art, but I find it hard imagining some people I know their age acting with such maturity / jumping into such moral dilemmas as Peter does. I don’t know. I just find it comical.

With all of this said, I think it’s a really good series. The writing is wonderful, and Brian Michael Bendis does a heck of a job, which brings me to my next point . . .

Have any of you played the videogame based on this comic? I think it may be one of the only Marvel or DC super-hero video games based on a particular series. But Bendis does the writing and contributes a lot to the game, and while the game itself is really short and there are quite a few flaws, it’s a pretty sweet experience if you’ve read the novels before. Also, you get the opportunity to play as Venom and jump across New York (can you really argue against that?). Now if only they could get it to be a New York as big as GTA did, that’d be amazing, and I can only hope they do in the future.

So with that said, I ask you with this question: what particular SUPER-HERO series would you like to see as a video game (considering art as well)? I honestly can’t even think of something off the top of my head . . . Marvel 1602? Maybe. That could be fun. Any ideas?
