Wonder Woman Donna Troy #1
Writer and Penciler: Jimenez Stokes
Well thanks for those posting in my absence last week, I was even more vacant than usual. I did just order a new set of the good stuff. Although by good stuff I mean one decent trade and a whole pile of cheap crap. It’s going to be a good time. Anyway, finally I get to actually read a #1. It was a new experience, things were all linear, I wasn’t lost and making rediculous assumptions about charecters, pretty crazy. I disregarded the “Girlfrenzy” header at the top and dove right in.I was ready to check out what this frenzy was all about though. I’ve got no qualms with comics directed towards other genders/races/what have you, so i had to give it a taste. Pretty standard throughout, I don’t have much experience with Wonder Woman or any of the apparant aliases she has, but I did wonder about her method whole Lasso of Truth thing.
Of course the idea of the Lasso is that once wrapped around the subject, he/she/it sees the ways of its error and reconciles to do good..etc. But of course this time it dosen’t work against someone so blinded by their own hatred for people that they thought what they were doing was the truth. In fact this is pretty representative of all supervillans, so there you have a silly situation. Usually most Superhero weapons are overkill for anyone but the biggest catches, however her’s is the opposite, it is unable to stop the most twisted, the ones that really count. Personally if I was waltzing into battle, I would like to make sure my equipment wasn’t dependant on the stable mental state of the person I was fighting. The Lasso would probably wither away if wrapped around The Joker or some really messed up incarnation.
Most of the old superheros (exceptions of course for Batman) were so idealistic and had flaws because of that. Sure they would go to the ends of the Earth and to the end of time to defeat the enemy, but getting the job done when innocent people are at stake and staying alive requires the hero to use some tactics of the enemy.
I could get into a whole deal about the current war in Iraq and how our battle tactics are like the Readcoats in colonial times, but I’m not making this a political soapbox. (Oh snap, he just did. No I called it, I didn’t. No callbacks, no eraseys, no white-outs). Either way, I enjoy that most heros have evolved to being specialized at one thing, destroying evil in any way they can.
Also reading this reminded me The Rock is an amazing movie and should be watched immediately.
