Hellboy: The Crooked Man #2 of 3

You know when someone won’t stop talking, butting in, or just plain being annoying, and you have to do everything you can to hold back from telling that person to “shut up”? Well, Hellboy doesn’t hold it back, and it’s awesome. I think what’s so great about Hellboy is his personality. There aren’t many superheroes that when a foe who has been annoying the shit out of them with talk the whole comic and is popping out of different places with her taunty verbage comes out and chips into a conversation will tell her to shut up and fire a shot at her. That’s Hellboy.

I also think Hellboy is an incredibly underrated movie franchise. It’s amazing that it’s so successful, and it amazes me even more that it had a sequel because I feel like I never come around a circle of people talking about the new Hellboy coming out to theaters. The only people I know who have interest in it are comic book fans, and we all know that niche market rarely ever drives Hollywood. Do you know anyone who doesn’t enjoy comics that has somehow found a way to like Hellboy? I don’t think it’s that you need to read comics to enjoy the movie, but I think it’s more that people won’t give it a shot if they don’t read comics. Yeah, I don’t get it. But the sales figures object . . .

Also, speaking of film, I finally saw Blade Runner last night. It’s been a long time coming, and I know I should have seen it several several years ago. Anyway, I thought it was interesting, but I couldn’t help but wondering the whole time how cool all of the scenery would look digitally re-mastered in blu-ray. Don’t get me wrong; I am glad I saw the original version, but it’d be a pretty awesome film to see updated. Has anyone seen the blu-ray version by any chance? I plan on doing so one day. Hopefully it doesn’t take as long as it took me to see the original.

I also think Phillip Dick is underrated. Think about it; the guy wrote the book that inspired Blade Runner, A Scanner Darkly, and Minority Report. He also has several other novels that I’m sure will eventually be made into films, yet he is anything but a household name. This guy deserves to be known! People should be talking about how “ooo, the new Phillip Dick movie is coming out” the same way they do with Frank Miller. I mean, Minority Report and Blade Runner especially — those were both incredibly successful films on both the money and critics’ side. I don’t see why someone wouldn’t want to promote that.

I will admit it; I’m not much of a comic book reader, but I thought both Hellboy movies were freaking amazing. They were totally bad ass, and I think that an overwhelming amount of people can appreciate the many aspects that made it bad ass (while at the same time having never really gotten into the comic) like for example the digital effects, the transformation of actors into really cool looking beasts and monsters, the cinematography, the storyline, the big name actors, and that Del Toro did not stray from the dark yet humorous setting that is Hellboy. Far too often a comic book movie will be followed by a sequal that is crap (Spiderman), but that was not the case with Hellboy.
