No More Heroes (Not the Video Game) thrown together by Dalton

I didn’t read a comic for today because I’m at away for the weekend and frankly, I forgot to buy a comic before leaving. But good news and bad news nonetheless! Let’s start with the good!

After about of month of scouring the internet for bloggers, we have hired a Weekend Writer, so now you can get your Unflappings fix 7 days a week, 365 days per year. What a deal! Our new writer’s name is Allison Fuhrmann. She is supremely awesome, and I’m sure you all will like her. Or at least you will grow to like her. Well, you better grow to like her because you’re stuck with her. Anyway — welcome, Allison!

Now the bad — I hate the television show Heroes. Seriously. There are many reasons behind this hatred, but I especially hate what it stands for and what it does to our society. Have you noticed how many people watch Heroes? A ton. Have you noticed how many of them go outside of Heroes to read comics and other comic related shit? Barely any. Have you noticed how many of them are adults that will scoff at you for reading a comic book that is essentially the same thing as watching Heroes but actually takes energy and using your mind to read opposed to watching a primetime show on television? Most. Beginning to see why I dislike it? Okay, but that’s not all.

Griffin: Chapter 9 Run LIke Hell
Writer: Dan Vado
Penciller: Norman Felchle
Inker: Mark McKenna
Letterer: Ken Holewczynski

From such a great cover, I thought I was going to be in for more of a ride. Instead I got some of the least inventive aliens ever. Really? Just by making heads into a point that creates a whole new race? Total loss of brain space.  Actually some of the most inventive/cool aliens I have seen/read about was from the My Teacher Is An Alien series.  Which actually connects with this pretty well considering both involve the destruction of earth.  Actually that story is a bit more diplomatic with some schoolkids who try to make a case for Earth, which is on a constant alien hunt..but you get the idea. Oh also Poots are amazing. Come to think of it that was probably the last novel series I even read.

What was I talking about? Oh right, strange life forms. (more…)

B.P.R.D. – The Ectoplasmic Man (One-Shot)
Writers: Mike Mignola and John Arcudi
Art: Ben Stenbeck

Who doesn’t like a little bit of ectoplasm with their morning coffee? Mike Mignola serves up a double shot of ectoplasm in this joy of a one-shot. “And what else besides coffee comes with ectoplasm?” you may ask. Ghosts. Plenty of ghosts. And dead people. Plenty of dead people.

Legion of Superheros in the 31st Century
Writer: J. Torres
Art: Chynna Clugston
Colors: Guy Major

Apart from the absolutely rediculously awesome name of Guy Major being the color dude on this one, what we have here is a pile of lamesauce on a lameburger from McLamers.  I can understand the concept of a kids comic book, and oddly enough I have one, but this is giving a bad impression to kids, showing them the poor quality of writing and easy to predict plotlines that will drive them away from the more mature material. I honestly think any worthy kid could handle it and should know what they are getting into, as well as the more advanced writing.  Any person who starts reading comics enjoys reading a bit as it is, so might as well appeal to their more advanced taste.

When I was a kid I enjoyed reading on my own, and strangely enough the words used were the good part, not the pictures, with the exception of Incredible Cross Sections (seriously, check that shit out, changed my life).  Actually, along with that I think it would be amazing if we had an Incredible Cross Sections book of superhero stuff (perhaps the superheros themselves..?). Knowing the inner workings of anything helps you appreciate it more. Sugar coated drawings are not the answer, give me some nitty gritty stuff any day of the week. I don’t care if they spent 20 pages of a book detailing the swizzle stick used by Bruce Wayne, I would slobber on every page of it.

I would also like to take this time to say I am a huge Olympics nerd and have been hooked up to an intravenous feed of it every waking second of the day. In fact I’m right now looking for more monitors/display devices so I dont miss all the action just in case they decide to air 30 sports at once. I’ll be ready. And I’ll say it because our athelets can’t: France, kindly suck a dick.

Yum, Erotic Comics thrown together by Dalton

Dear Wil,

So I was innocently googling comics yesterday, and I came across a blog called Yet Another Comics Blog. In the blog they had a list of new comics they (or maybe it’s just a he, but I’ll call it they to be safe) had bought and on the list was “Best erotic comics 2008 / San Francisco, Calif. : Last Gasp ; London : Turnaround [distributor], 2007.”

I’ve never bought an erotic comic, and I’ve never read one, but this reminder that they exist made me think of how interesting it would be for an erotic comic to be part of our mission for a post. It’d be like diving into a whole different dimension. I think I might do that someday . . . if I can ever convince myself to buy an erotic comic. I don’t want to be “that guy”!

Sincerely,

Dalton

Preacher: All Hell’s A-Coming
Writer: Garth Ennis
Art: Steve Dillion and John McCrea
Cover: Glenn Fabry

For starters and those of you who are concerned (which you probably aren’t): Wil and I switched posting days, so he’ll post tomorrow and I’ll take today. That’s all.

I really could go on and on about this book. I honestly think I could probably write a novel about it. Every time that it’s about to post, I have ideas for like 30 different topics. Because of that, it’s tough to narrow it down to just one. For that reason, I’m going to talk about two: Sand and Moving Walkways. Where will I go with that? NOBODY KNOWS! oooohhohohohohohohoh – dadadadadaa – (twilight zone theme) – begin!

Preacher: All Hell’s A-Coming
Writer: Garth Ennis
Art: Steve Dillion and John McCrea
Cover: Glenn Fabry

I just watched the most recent episode of Venture Bros. on Adult Swim. Brilliant as usual. Also, I’m happy that Wil somewhat tapped into Sandman. I know several people who have abandoned it after the first trade (Preludes and Nocturnes) / few issues, so I hope he sticks through it because it can definitely be difficult to get into at first, but once you get going, it’s a pretty amazing comic.

I am absolutely loving focusing on Preacher lately — there is so much to talk about! I read about 3 issues worth of the trade last night, and I don’t even know where to start. I have two options that I’m going to pull a Harvey Dent on: accidental castration or dog / human interaction. And the coin flips says .  .  . (more…)

The Absolute Sandman Preview
Author: Neil Gaiman
Artists: Sam Kieth & Mike Dringeberg
Letters: Todd Klein
Colors: Daniel Vozzo

Apparently Neil is some big shot writer I should know about.  A quick Google search revealed I actually did know about him, weirdly enough. I had seen Stardust (the movie) and thought it was a jolly good time, and it was pretty cute as well.  Seriously. Plus it featured one of the greatest hookups ever, but I won’t go into detail, its a good one, watch it. Anywho, I picked up this cover today because it was dark and had a weird face. That was my big draw.  I was mildly underwhelmed by the whole experience, but it did have a few very mentionable items. (more…)

Preacher Week! (for real this time) thrown together by Dalton

Preacher: All Hell’s A-Coming TPB 8 of 9
Writer: Garth Ennis
Art: Steve Dillon and Glenn Fabry

Last week was busy as fuck. Well, actually, what would busy as fuck be? I mean, typically fucking doesn’t take too much time. The whole process takes quite a bit of time, but the moment of insertion and . . .

I went too far.

My point is that last week was too busy for Preacher week. Hopefully this week will be less-so. Regardless, I’m totally taking on All Hell’s A-Coming, and you’re going to get it in your face on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Why? Because I love Preacher. Why else? Because you need to love Preacher. What’s one more reason? I have this weird void where I don’t feel like buying any new comics this week. It’s a “buyer’s block,” if you will. But the good news is that I don’t have the more advertised “writer’s block,” so you get to feel the splash of my spewing words like you always do. Today my spewing will be aimed at ways to die.

Thunderbolts Desperate Measures

Apparently I have stumbled on a real comic among the other crap.  I also hapepned to jump in the middle of a whole bunch of stuff I didn’t understand.  But one thing that is a universal language is the creative descripions that Bullseye has of killing people. These arnt just the “im going to kick in your skull and bash your face,etc..”, but bold, calculated to the last degree, moves. I admire this, and I’m sure everyone else already knows all about it, but I’m new here, give me a break, this is cool to me.  What i didn’t quite understand were the actions taken by the Thunderbolts to stop a seemingly harmless citizen.
