Peter Parker: Spider-Man – Issue 30 (in One Small Break TPB)
Writer: Paul Jenkins
Penciler: Mark Buckingham
Inkers: Green / Ramos / Buckingham

I wish I knew what happened to issue 29. For some reason it’s not in this trade, so I guess it’s fitting that I did NotLD instead on Wed. There’re a lot of meaning in me choosing to do that, and the greatest part is that I don’t even know what it is.

Anyway, I’m back to this Spider-Man trade, which I am actually finding enjoyable, especially as far as 2001 comics go. But for now, let’s focus on the kickassness of the villain in this issue.

So this villain named Fusion has an ability to do something sweet: fuse. Unfortunately, this comic wasn’t too detailing about why or how he could do this, but I’m sure I’ll find out more as I read on. Regardless, it was made clear that his ability consisted of him being able to shift into / use the power of pretty much any character in the Marvel Universe (think Kirby from Super Smash minus the literal sucking). Pictures come after the jump.

Now, I still don’t have a scanner, so stick with me because everything’s reversed, but I consider them to be some pretty snazzy webcam shots.

Now, as you can tell, there’s a little bit of Mister Fantastic, Thor’s Hammer, and Hulk’s Fist. I left out some of the other exciting stuff such as Captain America’s shield, Magneto’s metal movage, and Doc Octopus’ Octo-Arms. But the exact transformations aren’t what really matter, it’s the concept that’s worth talking about.

First of all, wouldn’t it be sucking to fight this? I mean, the guy even has spider-man’s abilities. He can do pretty much everything and pull out all the stops. Granted, he doesn’t quite have the expertise of a single power, but that’s one hell of a holster of ammo. The next question is, “How awesome would it be to be able to do this?” Talk about a big step over an already advantageous Mystique. He gets to morph and emulate these different levels of badass at will.

But you want a quick change of opinion?

I wouldn’t really want this power. The whole fun of having super powers is having something unique. I don’t want to be some copycat of everyone else. Even if my power sucks, I want to have something unique that I can be remembered by. I’d rather be “Super Paper Clip Man!” than “Super Copy Off of Everyone Else Man!” I dunno, call it a pride issue, but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

this is something i’ve been struggling w/ as a writer. i mean, i think it’s safe to say that i’m a writer and it’s also safe to say that i’ve had writer’s block for like, a year now. the main cause of my blockage is b/c everytime i sit down to write something (i’m talking about poetry here, my particular niche of writing that i’m actually good at, or THINK i’m good at)anyways, i sit down and write a few lines and realize that nothing i come up with is original. even my influences copied other writers, songwriters, etc. so how the hell is someone original or unique when it comes to writing? i mean, i’d love to think that my few published poems are unique but really, i steal writing styles (not phrases or words themselves). it’s hard not to copy those great masters of literature who’ve paved the way (Gwendolyn Brooks, i honor thee). but i guess if you could have the choice of copying others who are awesome or trying to be your own kind of awesome, it’d be a hard choice for me!

I want to use Fantastic Four Silver Surfer as an example here. At the end when they are all fighting their nemesis (Im sorry I don’t know the guys name) they are getting beat down hard so they combine all the powers using Torch and at first he still gets roughed up but for not very long. Even if someone is able to have countless other super abilities it still won’t be enough to beat everyone. Someone bigger and better always comes along, and someone always comes along that has some new extreme power that’s so bad ass that person won’t need the ability to have multiple super human powers.
