Sure there was a lot of apocolyptic talk going on. Everyone was running around like chickens sans a head. World destruction and military states. But the real issue that was going on for this chapter was not what the world was fixated on, it was what they were wearing. For example, The Griffin was retro styling in a half “mega popped collar” styling and half Capitan Planet once all the rings got together. It was definitely something…but of course the drawback to this getup is that your peripheral vision is pretty much compromised. I suppose thats ok though, since he was focusing on going straight ahead into victory.
Another shining example of some crazy style points would be Stomu. This giant suave banana was sporting checkerboard sunglasses. Aside from the obvious bitchin’ factor, these have some very real functionality besides just form. If he was ever in a battlefield situation he could easily judge how far apart things are from each other by counting the squares between them. Also he could color-code the baddies to keep things visually organized. Darling it’s fabulous let me tell ya.
Sure there was also tons of allusions to military coups and Patriot Act-esque effects over time, but that is not the major interest. To me, a comic book could be a downright fashion magazine. Oh and since I can’t even make a post these past few weeks without talking about the Olympics, there was definitely some statements there too. Men’s gymnasts are always styling in sequined pants and purple leotards. Although I can watch all of those things with no problem, men’s floor routine tends to creep me out slightly.
A “you go girl” to everyone who’s showing off what they’ve got today. Strut it!
Edit: First, an honor in the comment section. Secondly, here is the closest I found to those sunglasses. Too bad they definitely are not as sweet. http://www.sportsfantreasures.com/p/TENN110/

Hi,
A friend of mine pointed me to the review of The Griffin. I saw the last couple of them and while I can appreciate that our book was not your cup of tea, I was just wondering if you realized that you were reviewing a comic book that is nearly 20 years old.
I can handle negative comments, but seriously your reviews seem just confusing to me.

First off, we really don’t do conventional “reviews” here, and more just talk about things that inspire us while reading. In fact I found The Griffen relatively interesting considering I jumped in randomly at chapter 9 and have no prior knowledge. I have another one I will probably continue with.
I did not even realize it was 20 years old, haha. Quite amazing really, and honestly I don’t even know if I have tea leaves at this time, let alone a specific cup I enjoy. I’m with this for the experience and so far everything I’ve read so far has been an experience in some way or another.
And any style seems silly taken out of context like this, in 20 years we will look back on how ridiculous our style is now. Comics are just one way to immortalize what is seen as futuristic in any given era.
The greatest form of flattery is a random person making satirical and irreverent comments about something/someone else anyway, right?
