World War Hulk: Gamma Corps Issue 2
Writer: Frank Tieri
Art: Carlos Ferreira

Naturally, I like to finish a series once I’ve started, so today I took on book two of the Gamma Corps spin-off of World War Hulk. Book two wasn’t much better than the first. Maybe if you’re a big fan of pointless spin-offs, it’s good. But halfway into the series, the story is still being set up. This most recent book cut scenes faster with more cheesy tie-ins than Babel. I want to continue my argument from the last week: Why is violence more acceptable than bad language?

Once again, we readers are greeted with the joyous shift+number symbols instead of swearing. Once again, my intelligence was insulted. Once again, someone was torn to shreds while the word “damn” couldn’t even fly. Hell, a kid was even killed. And a woman’s “eye was melted into her eye socket” (yeah, pretty crazy, huh?). I think in the comic book industry we often see an attempt to appeal to a wide variety of ages in the A rated comics. That’s understandable. But if you’re going to try and appeal to me as well as kids, you need to make sure not to make me feel out of place while trying to enjoy it. I don’t know why I’m complaining, though; I think this is a basically made-for-kids comic. Not many political themes. Not many themes in general. Popcorn eye candy images. Continuity errors. No official swearing. I honestly don’t know why I’m even still reading. Maybe the hope that eventually my money will be justified? (there are still two issues left!) Who knows, but you’re going to take this journey with me. Ridin’ through the ups and downs.

Oh, one cool note. Midway through the comic there is one of the sweetest jail yard punches to the nose in comic history. Not because of who did it, the context, or anything significant, but the stream of blood created by the punch is absolutely out of control. I feel like the Yellowstone geyser was in this guy’s nose. Honestly. And I think that’s a pretty awesome characteristic. If you’re at a comic book shop anytime soon, pick this issue up (or the trade) and just flip through until you see a kid getting beat up in a prison yard. From there you’ll see this nosebleed. It almost makes me want to punch someone in the nose just to see if the same will occur.

Almost.
